A Floor That Looks Like Stone or Water
Metallic epoxy floors use pigments with tiny reflective particles mixed into clear epoxy. As the resin is poured and worked, the pigment swirls and settles, creating ripples, veins and depth that look like polished stone, lava or moving water. No two are the same. In Bowling Green we install metallic floors in finished basements, bonus rooms, home gyms, man caves and car garages that double as display space.
Fitting a car town
Every Chevrolet Corvette since 1981 has been built at the General Motors assembly plant in Bowling Green, and the National Corvette Museum sits next door. Plenty of local garages are built to show off a car, and a metallic floor in a deep charcoal or bronze is a popular way to do it. Metallic floors are smooth and glossy, so for a garage we recommend a texture additive in the topcoat and a polyaspartic or urethane top layer for scratch and UV resistance.
Where metallic works well
- Finished basements and bonus rooms: replaces carpet over concrete and holds up to spills.
- Home bars and media rooms: dramatic finish under low lighting.
- Retail and display floors: a seamless, eye-catching surface that is easy to keep clean.
- Display garages: a showpiece floor for a car or motorcycle collection.
What metallic shows
Metallic floors are glossy and smooth, so they show dust, footprints and scratches more than a flake floor does. They suit rooms that are swept regularly and see light to moderate use. Dark colors show dust most. If the room takes heavy equipment or a lot of grit, a flake system may serve you better, and we will say so.
The slab has to be ready
Because metallic floors are clear and smooth, any flaw in the concrete can telegraph through. We grind the floor flat, fill cracks and patch pits, and often apply a primer coat first. Moisture is the other big risk in basements. Moisture pushing up through a slab can cause bubbles and lifting. We test before we quote, and if the reading is high we explain the options, including a moisture-mitigating primer or fixing a water source before any decorative work.
Designing your floor
You choose a base color and one or more accent colors. We talk through the look you want, show you photos and sample boards, and explain how the technique affects the pattern: rolled, sprayed, troweled or poured. Final patterns can't be controlled exactly, which is part of the appeal.
Living with a metallic floor
Use felt pads under furniture legs and a soft dust mop for daily cleaning. Grit is what scratches a gloss floor, so mats at the doors help a lot. Mop with warm water and a little neutral cleaner. If the topcoat wears down in a busy path after years of use, it can be lightly sanded and recoated without redoing the pattern underneath.
What This Covers
A metallic floor is a multi-coat decorative system built on a flat, sound slab.
Grinding and flattening
Diamond grinding to remove high spots, old coatings and weak surface.
Primer and patch
Cracks and pits filled and a primer coat applied so flaws don't show through.
Metallic pour
Pigmented epoxy poured and worked by hand to create the pattern.
Protective topcoat
A clear wear-resistant topcoat, with satin or texture options.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How expensive is metallic epoxy?
This Old House lists metallic epoxy floors at $5 to $12 per square foot. Complex multi-color designs, moisture treatment and slab repair push the total higher.
Is metallic epoxy good for a garage?
It can be, especially in a display garage, but the gloss shows tire marks and dust and can be slick when wet. We add texture and a tough topcoat for garage use.
Can metallic epoxy go in a basement?
Yes, if the slab is dry enough. We test for moisture first, because moisture coming up through the concrete can lift a decorative floor.
Will my floor look like the photos?
It will follow the colors and technique we agree on, but every metallic floor flows differently. We show you sample boards made with your colors before we start.
