Westmoreland Floors, Old and New

Westmoreland is the southern end of our service area for epoxy flooring, just over the Tennessee line from Kentucky. It is a small Sumner County town, chartered and incorporated in 1901 and named for a lumberman from North Carolina. It is best known for a railroad tunnel built in 1887 that the town calls the smallest in the world, the Little Tunnel. A mural in the Town Square shows it alongside other local landmarks.

A small town that is growing

Westmoreland counted 2,093 people in 2000, 2,206 in 2010 and 2,718 in 2020. That is roughly 23% growth in the last decade, which is a lot for a town this size. The result is a mix of housing. Some homes are older, with detached garages, carports and concrete poured years ago. Others are newer, with attached two-car garages and young slabs. We see both, and the prep is different:

Older slabs often need old paint or sealer ground off, cracks filled, chipped edges rebuilt and low spots leveled before anything goes down.

Newer slabs usually need a full grind to remove the weak surface layer and curing compounds, plus attention to any early shrinkage cracks at corners and joints.

Up on the Highland Rim

Westmoreland sits at about 925 feet, well above the Green River towns to the north. Higher ground does not keep a garage dry in a Tennessee summer, though. Warm, humid air meets a cool slab and condenses, and floors can sweat. We check slab moisture and temperature on install day and adjust timing so the coating cures right.

What we install here

  • Garage Floor Coating for daily parking, with a flake or solid color finish
  • Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy for the small businesses around the business district
  • Concrete Crack & Slab Repair for the older floors in town
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating when you want the garage back in service fast

For a busy family garage we often suggest a flake system with a polyaspartic topcoat. It hides dirt, adds grip and handles afternoon sun when the door is open.

How the job runs

1. We visit, measure and test the slab for moisture and old coatings. 2. You get a written, itemized quote. 3. On install day the whole floor is diamond ground, edges included. 4. Cracks and chips are filled and ground flush. 5. The base coat, flake or color layer and topcoat go down in order. 6. You get written times for walking, moving items back and parking.

Most two-car garages are done in one to two days. Older floors with more repair work can take a little longer, and we tell you that in the quote.

Caring for the floor

Sweep grit regularly, wipe spills promptly and rinse the floor with a mild cleaner a few times a year. Put a pad under kickstands and jack stands to protect the topcoat from point loads.

Garage doors left open

Many Westmoreland homeowners keep the garage door up on summer afternoons. Sunlight on a standard epoxy can cause it to yellow or chalk over time. A polyaspartic topcoat is far more UV stable, so it keeps its color in a sunny garage. That is why we often pair a flake base with a polyaspartic clear coat on attached garages that face the street or the afternoon sun.

Westmoreland Questions

Do you travel to Westmoreland from Bowling Green?

Yes. Westmoreland is part of our regular service area along with Portland. We schedule on-site estimates here the same way we do in Kentucky.

Can you coat an older garage that was painted years ago?

Yes. Old paint must come off completely, so we grind the floor down to sound concrete. Then we fill cracks and chips and apply the new system. A coating laid over old paint will only stick as well as that paint does.

Why does my garage floor sweat in summer?

Humid air condenses on a cooler concrete slab. A coating does not stop condensation, but it makes the floor easier to wipe dry and protects it from stains. A textured topcoat helps with grip on damp days.
