Cracks Are Common Here. Here's How We Handle Them.
Concrete crack and slab repair is part of almost every floor we coat in Bowling Green. Concrete shrinks as it cures, so nearly every slab cracks somewhere. Around here the ground adds its own stress. The city sits on karst, limestone that dissolves over time, under a layer of clay soil. When that clay gets soaked it gets heavier and softer, and slabs can settle or crack. Before any coating goes on, those cracks have to be dealt with.
What the ground is doing
The USDA's Pembroke soil series, one of the common soils of the Pennyroyal region, has its type location in Warren County. The official description lists it on "nearly level uplands and karst areas," formed in a thin silty layer over limestone residuum. After the April 2025 rains, WKYU reported the city geologist saying that near Russellville Road and Nashville Road the cave systems are often 15 to 20 feet or less below the surface. Your garage is very unlikely to see a sinkhole. Soil movement, though, is a normal part of slab life here, and cracks deserve a careful look.
Cracks we fill and coat over
- Shrinkage cracks: thin cracks from corners or across the slab, usually stable.
- Control joint cracks: cracks along the cut joints, where the concrete was designed to crack.
- Spalls and chips: broken edges at joints, door thresholds and where something heavy was dropped.
- Pitting and surface wear: rough, eroded patches that need filling to give an even surface.
Cracks that need a closer look
- A crack where one side sits higher than the other
- A crack that has visibly grown or reopened after patching
- A section of slab that has sunk or tilted
- Cracks with water coming up through them
- A low spot or hollow sound that suggests a void beneath
These can point to soil settling, a void or a drainage issue. A coating will crack right along with a moving slab, so we show you what we see and recommend getting it evaluated before you invest in a new floor. We don't do foundation work or slab lifting ourselves.
How we repair
We grind or chase cracks open so filler can bond to clean concrete, vacuum them out, and fill them with a rigid or semi-rigid repair material depending on the crack. Spalls and pits are patched with a fast-setting repair mortar or epoxy mortar. Once cured, the repairs are ground flush with the floor so the coating lays smooth. For floors with widespread surface damage, a thin resurfacing layer may make more sense than patching hundreds of spots.
Repairs without a coating
Most of our repair work comes before a coating, but if you only want cracks and chips fixed on a garage or shop floor, we can quote that too. Uncoated patches will show as a different color from the surrounding concrete.

How It Works
1. Inspect
We map every crack and spall and check for height differences, hollow spots and moisture.
2. Explain
We tell you which cracks we can repair and coat and which ones need a closer look first.
3. Repair
We open, clean and fill cracks and patch spalls and pits.
4. Grind flush
Repairs are ground level with the floor, ready for coating.

Concrete Crack & Slab Repair Questions
Will cracks show through my new epoxy floor?
Stable cracks that are properly filled and ground flush usually disappear under a flake floor. On solid colors and metallic floors, a faint line can sometimes show. A crack that keeps moving will eventually crack the coating.
How do I know if a crack is structural?
Warning signs include one side sitting higher than the other, a crack that keeps widening, or a section of slab that has sunk. We point these out, but a structural engineer or foundation contractor should evaluate them.
Do sinkholes cause garage floor cracks?
Rarely directly. In karst areas, the more common cause is clay soil settling or shifting, especially after heavy rain. Most garage cracks are ordinary shrinkage cracks.
How much does concrete crack repair cost?
HomeAdvisor puts patch and crack repair at $25 to $250. Widespread damage that needs resurfacing runs about $3 to $7 per square foot according to HomeGuide.
