Why Flake Is the Go-To Garage Finish
Epoxy flake floors are the finish we install most in Bowling Green garages. Colored vinyl chips are scattered into a wet epoxy base coat until the surface is fully covered, then the loose chips are scraped off and the floor is sealed with a clear topcoat. The result is a speckled floor that looks a lot like terrazzo or granite and hides the red clay dust, grass clippings and tire marks that collect in a working garage.
How a full broadcast differs from a light scatter
Kits often come with a small bag of flakes to sprinkle over a painted floor. That light scatter is mostly decorative. A full broadcast puts down enough chips that no base color shows through. The chips become a layer of the floor, adding thickness and texture. That extra build helps against hot tire pickup on summer afternoons and gives the topcoat something to lock into.
What a flake floor hides
- Dust and dried mud between sweeps
- Small scuffs and tire marks
- Minor color differences where cracks were patched
- Water spots after you wash the car
That last point matters here. With a humid summer and frequent rain (Wikipedia lists about 47.5 inches of precipitation a year for Bowling Green), garages see a lot of wet tires. A solid gloss floor shows every drip mark. A flake floor doesn't.
Choosing colors
Flake blends come in dozens of color mixes and several chip sizes. Larger chips make a bolder pattern. Smaller chips give a tighter, more even look. Gray and tan blends are popular because they hide dust well. Darker blends look sharp but show light dust. We bring sample boards to your estimate so you can compare them on your own slab under your own lights.
Grip and texture
The chip layer gives a flake floor a slight texture even after the topcoat. If you want more traction, for a porch, a ramp or a garage where people walk in with wet shoes, we add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the final coat. The more texture, the more grip, but the floor also takes a bit more effort to mop. We help you find the balance.
Beyond the garage
Flake systems also suit workshops, pole barn floors, laundry rooms, covered porches and basement utility areas. On outdoor or sun-exposed concrete, we use a polyaspartic topcoat because standard epoxy can yellow in UV light.
Prep is the same as any coating
Flakes don't fix a bad bond. Every flake floor starts with diamond grinding, crack filling and a moisture check, the same as any other system we install.

How It Works
1. Pick the blend
We bring flake samples to the estimate and help you choose color and chip size.
2. Grind and repair
The slab is diamond ground, vacuumed and patched.
3. Base and broadcast
We roll out the base coat and broadcast flakes until the surface is fully covered.
4. Scrape and seal
Loose chips are scraped and vacuumed, then the clear topcoat goes on.

Epoxy Flake Floors Questions
Are flake floors more durable than plain epoxy?
A full broadcast adds thickness and texture, which helps with abrasion and hot tires. The topcoat does most of the protecting, so the topcoat choice matters as much as the flakes.
Are flake floors slippery when wet?
They have more grip than a smooth gloss floor because the chips leave texture. For porches, ramps or wet entries we add an anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat.
How do I clean a flake floor?
Sweep or dust mop, then mop with warm water and a mild cleaner. Skip harsh acids and citrus degreasers that can dull the topcoat.
Can a flake floor go outside?
Yes, on porches and patios, with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. HomeGuide rates polyaspartic UV resistance as excellent and epoxy as poor to fair, so plain epoxy is a poor choice in direct sun.
