Floors for a Town With Deep Roots

Epoxy flooring in Smiths Grove covers a wider range of buildings than you might expect from a town of about 750 people. The census was already counting 388 residents here in 1880. The old Louisville and Nashville rail line, now run by CSX, still cuts straight through downtown, and Main Street is KY 101. Many of the buildings along it are listed on the National Register.

Downtown and the historic district

The Smiths Grove Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1979. It takes in the area around 1st and Main Streets and stretches toward the cemetery, the railroad, Hedge Street and Kentucky Street, with a boundary increase in 1987. The town has ten National Register listings in all, including the Baptist and Presbyterian churches and several older houses.

Old commercial buildings often have concrete floors that were patched, painted or covered with tile over the years. When an owner pulls up the old covering, the slab underneath is usually rough. What we can do there:

  • Grind off adhesive, paint and old sealers
  • Fill cracks and level low spots
  • Lay a solid color or flake system that stands up to foot traffic
  • Add a metallic floor in a shop or tasting room that wants a showpiece look

A coating sits on top of the concrete and does not change the walls, windows or front of a building. If your building is part of the district and you are unsure about any rules, check with the city before work starts.

Older slabs need more prep

Concrete in older buildings was often poured without a vapor barrier, and some floors have been wet and dry many times over the decades. That means a moisture test is the first thing we do. If the slab is damp, we can use a moisture-tolerant primer, or recommend fixing the water problem first. We also check for old oil stains in former garages and service buildings, since oil soaked deep into concrete can keep a coating from sticking. Heavy stains get ground out or treated before we coat.

Out past the edge of town

Once you leave Main Street, Smiths Grove turns rural fast. Two farm properties near town, Cave Spring Farm and the Mitchell-Estes Farmstead, are on the National Register too. Rural homes here often have a detached garage, a pole barn or an equipment shed with a concrete floor that takes tractors, mowers and muddy boots. For those we usually suggest:

  • Shop and commercial floor epoxy where heavy equipment rolls in and out
  • Flake floors with grit so wet boots and mud do not make the floor slick
  • Crack and slab repair on older pours that have broken up near the door

Smiths Grove Questions

Can you coat the floor of an older downtown building in Smiths Grove?

In most cases, yes. We start by grinding off old tile adhesive, paint or sealers, then repair cracks and low spots. Once the concrete is clean and sound, a solid color, flake or metallic system can go down. If the building is in the historic district, check with the city first if you have questions about what needs approval.

I have a pole barn with a concrete floor. Is epoxy worth it out there?

If you work on equipment or store machines inside, it often is. A coated floor resists oil and fuel, sweeps clean and makes dropped parts easy to find. We add grit to the topcoat so it stays safe when wet.

Do you come out to farms outside town limits?

Yes. We work on rural properties around Smiths Grove as well as homes and businesses in town.
